How to Choose the Right TPMS Sensor: Things to Check Before You Buy
Buying TPMS sensors for the first time?
It’s easy to focus on the unit price. But price is actually one of the last things you should look at.
A sensor may look similar to another one, but that doesn’t mean it will work on the same vehicle.
Before you place an order, here are a few things worth checking.
1. What vehicles are you selling to?
Start with the vehicles.
Are your customers mainly driving passenger cars? Motorcycles? Trucks? Trailers? RVs?
Then check the year, make, model, and market.
For example, the same vehicle model can have different TPMS requirements in different markets. So simply saying “I need sensors for Toyota” is usually not enough.
If you are buying for distribution, it’s better to send your supplier a vehicle list first.
That makes it much easier to check compatibility.
2. External or internal sensor?
This is one of the first choices you’ll need to make.
External TPMS
The sensor is installed on the outside of the valve.
The main advantage is simple: installation is usually much easier. In many cases, there is no need to remove the tire.
That can be useful for tire shops, auto accessory stores, and aftermarket customers who want a quick installation.
Internal TPMS
The sensor is installed inside the tire.
It gives you a more integrated setup, but the tire normally needs to be removed during installation.
So which one is better?
There isn’t one answer for everyone.
It depends on your market, the vehicles you work with, installation requirements, and what your customers prefer.
3. Don’t forget the frequency
You may often see TPMS sensors listed as 315 MHz or 433.92 MHz.
But here’s something important:
The same frequency does not automatically mean the sensor is compatible.
You also need to consider the vehicle application, communication protocol, programming method, and relearn process.
So if a supplier tells you, “It’s 433 MHz, so it will work,” that’s probably not enough information.
4. Programmable or fixed sensor?
If you sell TPMS sensors to different vehicles, programmable sensors can make inventory management easier.
Instead of keeping a large number of different sensor models, one programmable sensor may cover multiple applications.
That can mean:
- Fewer SKUs to manage
- More vehicle coverage
- Easier aftermarket support
- More flexibility for distributors
But there is one thing you should check first:
Does the programming tool actually support the vehicles you need?
A programmable sensor is only useful if it can be programmed correctly for your target applications.
5. What programming tool do you need?
If you’re buying programmable TPMS sensors, don’t forget about the tool.
Ask your supplier:
- Which vehicles are supported?
- Which protocols are supported?
- How is the sensor programmed?
- Can the programmed data be checked?
- Is a specific programming tool required?
This is especially important if you are buying for a tire shop or aftermarket distribution business.
You don’t want to receive hundreds of sensors and then find out that your existing tool can’t program them.
6. How does the vehicle relearn the sensor?
Programming the sensor is only part of the job.
After installation, the vehicle may need to relearn the new sensor ID.
Depending on the vehicle, the relearn process can be different.
So before buying, ask:
“How does this vehicle learn the new sensor?”
It sounds like a small question, but it can save a lot of trouble later.
7. What does the TPMS actually warn you about?
Don’t only look at whether the display shows tire pressure.
It’s also worth checking what happens when something goes wrong.
For example:
- Low tire pressure
- High temperature
- Low sensor battery
- Sensor signal loss
The last one is particularly worth checking.
If a sensor stops communicating, does the system clearly warn the driver?
For a TPMS product, the warning functions are just as important as the numbers shown on the screen.
8. Check the installation details
A few small details can also make a difference.
Check things like:
- Valve type
- Wheel compatibility
- Sensor size
- Battery type
- Operating temperature
- Tire sealant compatibility
For example, if your customers commonly use tire sealant, ask the supplier whether the sensor is suitable for that application.
These details may not look important when you’re comparing products on a screen, but they can become important after installation.

Only checking the car brand
“Toyota sensor” or “Ford sensor” is not specific enough.
You normally need the exact vehicle application.
Assuming the same frequency means compatibility
It doesn’t.
Frequency is only one part of the compatibility check.
Buying programmable sensors without checking the tool
Make sure the programming tool supports the applications you actually sell.
Forgetting about relearn
A sensor can be correctly programmed and still require the correct vehicle relearn procedure.
Only checking the pressure display
A good TPMS solution should also have clear warning functions when communication or sensor conditions change.
What should you look for in a TPMS supplier?
If you’re buying for your own business, the supplier matters almost as much as the sensor.
A good supplier should be able to give you clear information about:
- Vehicle coverage
- Compatibility
- Programming
- Installation
- Testing
- OEM/ODM options
- Technical support
- MOQ and trial orders
It’s also worth knowing how the products are actually made and tested.

“How much is it?”
Start with:
“Which vehicles do I need it for?”
Then work your way through:
Vehicle → Sensor Type → Frequency → Compatibility → Programming → Relearn → Installation → Functions
